It's not Spanish and it's not moss, but it is called Spanish Moss. The silvery-green plant that hangs from trees is a relative of the pineapple. The plant does not hurt the tree and is used by some birds as nesting material. Spanish moss was used by Henry Ford, Sr. as seat stuffing for his original Model T. Others used the plant as stuffing for mattresses until they found that insects infested the mass ­ hence the phrase, "Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite."
